5 Powerful Psychological techniques to deal with negative thoughts.

Do you know, what is the most dangerous weapon in the world? It’s your mind. Yes!It has a significant power to help you to protect from other’s manipulations or it can also destroy you with your own misinterpretations. Do you know why is it so hard to defeat your n0egative thoughts, especially when it is kept on playing in the repeated loops, just like a tape recorder? What it takes to overcome from your negative thoughts? Here, you can find the answer!

First, let us briefly discern what positive thoughts are and what negative thoughts are, for a better understanding. There are two types of thoughts in my own observation.

Incomingthoughts: – Unconscious Thoughts are the thoughts that we think without our awareness, it is known as ‘Habitual-Thinking’ which means, when we keep on thinking about something repetitively, those thoughts become an anchor in our unconscious mind loops— aimless thoughts, automatic actions, memorized behaviours, that functions just like a computer program.

Outgoing thoughts: – Conscious thoughts are the thoughts that we think withour awareness, it is known as called ‘Deliberate thinking’ which means, paying all our attention in the present moment and jumps from one point to the next in the normal and routine way. All our actions, behaviours, and thoughts are the conscious choice—A field of awareness.

Practice #1:- Make a ritual of practicing Meditation.

As we all know the immense benefits of practicing meditation but somehow most of us neglected doing it for our own reasons. Many research evidence shows that meditation improves our mental health and helps to reduce our stress, depression, anxiety, and many other mental illnesses.

There are numerous ways of practicing medication. Here, I am going to tell you, one among them which is more beneficial but if you are a beginner, I recommend you to start with small steps and then you can work on your own way up. Try to start meditating for five to ten minutes each day at first and then add on 5 minutes on every respective week. There is no right way or wrong way to do this; there is no set of rules to follow. All it matters is that you have to do in your own way to improve your life. I can give my version of practicing meditation which may help you to start your own style.

BASIC MEDITATION:-

• Sit in a comfortable place where you feel less disturb, cross-legged position on the floor, or a chair, with your hands on your knees or in your lap.

• Your spine should be straight and then close your eyes.

• “My arms, my legs, and my whole body are getting relaxed.” Repeat this affirmation until your body gets into a relaxation mode.

• After that, slowly start focusing on your breaths. (Your in-breath and out-breath) You don’t have to breathe in a special way. Just focus on your normal breaths. If your mind keeps on wandering, all you have to do is, you need to bring it back to your awareness. Every time you overcome your unconscious thoughts, you are repairing a little bit of your inner-self. After doing this for 5-10 minutes, shift your attention on chanting “Om or Aum” mantras or your own devotional songs or any Sanskrit mantras for your own good and you can also listen to the guided mediation music for better improvement. That’s all it. Sound simple, right? Neither is it a simple nor difficult ritual. With an intense practice, it becomes your cup of tea.

Practice #2:- Aware of your negative thoughts or Unconscious thoughts.

The first step is to become the conscious of your unconscious thoughts; you have to start looking at those repetition thoughts that you think every day and become more aware of it. All you have to do is, sit down and observe your thoughts because when you begin to observe your thoughts, you’re no longer victim of your unconscious thoughts or negative thoughts. If you become conscious of self, you won’t go unconscious of any thought, any behaviour or emotion, staying conscious means staying aware and staying at the present moment. So in order to be aware of your unconscious thoughts, you should be more focused on what you are doing right at this moment (Presence of mind) rather than revisiting the past events unconsciously. You have to more aware of the present moment, keeping all your attention on the present activity.

‘Paying attention to the present moment’ is a skill like any other skill. Learn it through intense practice. The moment, you start staying in the present, you are slowly getting yourself away from your past unconscious patterns. That’s when your liberation starts.

Practice #3:- Be the creator of your inner-self.

Thoughts and feelings are interconnected with each other. The way you think is the way you feel and vice versa. If you feel happy then you have happy thoughts or positive thoughts. You feel sad, and then you have sad thoughts or negative thoughts.

Thoughts = Feelings

Example: — when your loved ones propose you, you will have happy thoughts and blissful feelings towards on her. But you will have unhappy thoughts and depressed feelings on the same person when she rejects you.

Therefore, some people (or) some conditions in your environment are controlling the way you are thinking and the way you are feeling. Your five (5) senses taking the signals from your environment which affects your neurological networks in your brain. As a matter of fact, your brain organizes the same pattern which is habitual. As long as you think equal to your environment, you keep creating the same reality as yesterday. If something outside of you is controlling the way you think and feel, then you are a victim of your environment. Your outer world circumstances decide your inner world conditions. Therefore, we can’t think and feel greater than our environment. In order to overcome this, you should learn how to self-regulate your thoughts and feelings. Depending upon how you’re regulating or channelizing your thoughts and feelings decides your ‘state of being’

The best way to deal with negative thoughts is to sow the seeds of the positive thoughts in your garden of mind along with the positive feelings holding in your heart. When you start thinking and feeling the way you want, not getting influenced by the outer world. And then you begin to realize the way you feel and think begin to produce some positive effects within yourself. Now, you start believing you’re the creator of your life, not the victim of your environment. You can’t always control circumstances. However, you have a choice to control your thoughts and actions.Don’t focus too much on the outer world as your inner world dictates your reality. Don’t become the victim of your environment instead becomes the creator of your inner-self.

Practice #4:- Write it down your negative thoughts on a piece of paper.

The best way to defeat your negative thoughts is to write it down. Take a piece of paper and write “What thoughts do you have to stop thinking.″ List out those negative thought on the left side of the page and also write the counter positive thought on the right side of the page.

Example: –

NegativeThought: – My sister/brother is better at this than I am.

PositiveThought: – Everybody has different strengths and weaknesses. I am better than my sister/brother at other things.

One of the powerful techniques of writing those thoughts down is you completely eliminate and weaken their influence over you. They become minimized when you write them. When you write it down your negative thoughts along with the counter positive thoughts, your negative thoughts lose their power. It’s a significantly powerful exercise to overcome your negative thoughts. After next, you should work on your feelings, which influences your thoughts. No matter how hard you try to think positively, if you are holding negative feelings within you, nothing works out. So all you have to do is, you start writing down all the choices you need to make, all the things you got to do. All the goals and experiences you want in your future. Every time you write of those goals or experiences down, you start to feel more of those feelings which create positive thoughts. When you start working on your goals and holding the positive images in your head, and an elevated emotion in your heart, and that’s when a significant change happens within you.

Practice #5:- Gratitude is a new attitude.

As I said in the previous point, you can’t think positively when you’re holding negative feelings like fear, guilt, shame, sadness, jealousy and worry. People wake up in the morning and they start thinking about all their problems and those problems are memories of certain things or people in the past, once they start thinking in the past, one of the problems has an “emotion”, and then they start feeling unhappy. When you are very first thought of the day was in the past which triggers unhappy feelings then all your day would be carried with the same negative thoughts. In order to overcome this, every morning when you wake up from your sleep, instead of thinking of your day or your past, you simply show your gratitude to the almighty by affirming like this, “Thankyou, Almighty for giving me another beautiful day to improve myself.” You can add your own affirmation if you want. When you start your day with a grateful feeling then your entire day would be filled with positivity.

“The first hour of your day defines the rest of the day.” —Robin Sharma.

Every night before you go to bed, review your day and either write it down or mentally note five things you can be grateful for in your life. These can be everything, either it can be objects or people in your life — just be grateful and thankful to whoever the cause for your happy life. There is no room for negative thoughts, when you truly in the state of love, compassion and gratitude because it’s not possible to be fearful and grateful at the same time. When you are consistently in the state of gratitude all your day, you are self-reliant from your past programs and begin to see the great change in your thoughts and feelings.

Remember this, you can’t think positively by holding negative feelings within you.
