On 10 August 2013, Sindhu became the first ever Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the World Championships. On 30 March 2015, she received India’s fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. On 18ugust 2016, she became the first Indian woman to reach Olympic finals after beating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the semi-finals of Rio Olympics 2016.[3] She broke into the Top 20 in the Badminton World Federation rankings released on 21 September 2012.[4]

Sindhu’s father Ramana is himself an Arjuna Awardee. Ramana represented India in Volleyball. On 18 August 2016 Sindhu beat Japanese badminton player Nozomi Okuhara in Rio Olympics 2016 to enter into the finals of Badminto’s singles and assuring India of a silver in badminton. This victory was considered a historic moment for India as this was the first time an Indian had entered into the finals of badminton in Olympics.

9:23: Sindhu is just two points away from the Olympics final. She has taken nine straight points and makes it 10, after a deft play at the net. Sindhu reaches the final with a characteristic smash, after clinching the second game, 21-10.

9:20: Okuhara has hit it wide, and Sindhu leads 17-10, and makes it 18-0, with the Japanese coming under pressure.

9:16: After the interval, Sindhu seems to be in a hurry as she collects points like never before in a match. Sindhu, with a brilliant game at the net and baseline, has opened up the lead to a mammoth six points, 16-10. This is stunning from the Indian shuttler.
