Travel back in time at the Bhimbetka Caves

Want to take a trip back into the past, like way back into it? Then you should definitely visit the Bhimbetka Caves near Bhopal, which will take you right back to the time of the prehistoric man!

After knowing what’s there in Bhimbetka, it is next to impossible to sit back and not travel there. All you have to do is leave the comfort of your 3 star hotel in bhopal (it’s hard though to do so!), and head out to this place for half a day. Set out early in the morning and if you find the place, really interesting you can even stay here till sunset, since the place opens at sunrise and stays open till sunset!

The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site of the Paleolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age.

How to reach the Bhimbetka Caves?

It is located only 45kms away from the main city of Bhopal. It would roughly take you about an hour and a half to reach this place, if you decide to stop for breakfast on the way. The best option of travelling to the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters is to book a car from your three star hotel in bhopal itself, where you are staying and it will take you to the place. Just make sure that you tell them while hiring the car whether you want to spend the entire day there or want to come back by lunch.

Things you should know about the Bhimbetka Caves

You will find more than 700 rock shelters over here, of which 400 show signs of being inhabited. The most attractive part of the Bhimbetka Caves is the drawings of the prehistoric man that you find on the cave walls!

However, there are a few interesting stories attached with the naming of these caves as well. Surely there is no way of knowing what these caves were called during the time of the prehistoric man; they probably called these their homes. Jokes apart, you will actually find the mention of these caves in the Mahabharata. It is believed when in exile, the Pandavas had taken shelter in the caves here and the massive structures had had enough room to even accommodate the great Bhima. It is believed that the name Bhimbetka comes from that!

The discovery of the Bhimbetka caves

Do you know what happens when you wander far too long into a path that is not often treaded by men? Well, it seems, you accidently bump into one of the structures of the Bhimbetka caves! It so happened that sometime during the year 1958, Dr. Vishnu Wakankar from the Vikram University in Ujjain wandered away too long from the path and chanced upon one of the greatest discoveries of mankind! However, the doctor had only a hunch about what he may have chanced upon. Extensive excavations were conducted here after that and slowly it revealed the wonders that it held, going back as early as the Palaeolithic Age and as recent as the medieval Ages!

There are many things to check out at the Bhimbetka Caves. In fact, a round through some of the rock shelters will surely give you a feel of what would happen if you could have time travelled!
