What are the most popular sports in India?

1. Cricket (IPL)

People in India love cricket to the point where it’s an important part of their lives. During the British rule of India, it was first used and has become a part of the country’s history and tradition.

In 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL), a professional Twenty-20 cricket competition, was started. It is now the most popular cricket league in the world because so many people go to see it. If you look at data from Duff & Phelps, it says that the value of the IPL brand in 2019 was US $6.7 billion. The league is very popular in India, and it makes a big impact on the country’s economy. During the 2015 season, the league’s governing body, BCCI, said that US$160 million was added to the Indian GDP because of that season.

There were a lot of important awards that the country’s cricket team had won. One should check out how popular the Indian cricket teams are by seeing some live matches on Indian sports news when they are playing. Indian cricket teams have won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. The team’s games against Pakistan are some of the most-watched TV shows in India.

2. Kabaddi (PKL)

Kabbadi is a sport that comes from the Indian subcontinent and has been one of the most popular in the country for a long time. Indians play in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), which is the top level of the game. A new league was started in 2014, and since then, it has become very popular with fans and people who watch it on TV. The first season of the PKL was watched by 435 million people on TV, which was second only to the Indian Premier League’s 552 million.

People in India have thought that since then, it has been the fastest-growing type of sport in the country. From 2016 to 2017, the league was able to get nearly 100 million more people to watch it. In fact, the Pro Kabaddi League has been watched by more Indians than the last football World Cup was watched by. Investments and sponsorship deals have been going up, and player salaries have been going up, as well. There are also signs that India’s favourite native sport is becoming more popular outside of the country.

3. Football (ISL and I-League)

Football (soccer) is another sport that was popular in India during the British colonial era. While Indians have had some of the best cricket players and teams in the world, they haven’t had as much success with their football teams yet. When other Asian teams didn’t want to play in the 1950 World Cup, India was asked to join (the legend has it that Indians refused to participate because they were not allowed to play barefoot).

Football is still one of the most popular sports in India, even though there haven’t been many great international victories. It is very popular both as a spectator and as a way to play. India’s top two leagues are the Indian Super League (ISL) and the I-League. They are the best competition there. There isn’t promotion and relegation in the ISL, which was started in 2013. Instead, it grows through expansion, like Major League Soccer in the United States.

5. Field hockey (HIL)

Field hockey has been one of the most popular sports in India for a long time. Many people think of it as the national game of India. A major sports league called the Hockey India League (HIL) is one of the most watched in the country. The league was started in 2013, and there are now six teams in it. Each team plays 10 games during a two-month regular season, which is then followed by the play-offs.
