When other Asian teams didn’t want to play in the 1950 World Cup, India was asked to join (the legend has it that Indians refused to participate because they were not allowed to play barefoot).
Football is still one of the most popular sports in India, even though there haven’t been many great international victories. It is very popular both as a spectator and as a way to play. India’s top two leagues are the Indian Super League (ISL) and the I-League. They are the best competition there. There isn’t promotion and relegation in the ISL, which was started in 2013. Instead, it grows through expansion, like Major League Soccer in the United States.
5. Field hockey (HIL)
Field hockey has been one of the most popular sports in India for a long time. Many people think of it as the national game of India. A major sports league called the Hockey India League (HIL) is one of the most watched in the country. The league was started in 2013, and there are now six teams in it. Each team plays 10 games during a two-month regular season, which is then followed by the play-offs.
