Things I Wish I Knew Before Entering College Life
When I first entered college, I thought I had to be prepared for everything—perfect plans, great marks, the right friends, and instant success. But the truth? Nothing really goes exactly how you imagine. And that’s not a bad thing.
If I could go back and talk to my younger self, here are a few things I wish I had known before stepping into college life. Maybe they’ll help you feel a little less lost too.
1. You don’t need to have it all figured out
Seriously. Everyone walks into college thinking they need a clear path and big dreams sorted. But most people are figuring things out as they go—just like you will. You’re allowed to change your mind, discover new interests, and grow at your own pace.
2. Marks from school don’t matter as much anymore
No one’s going to ask you what you got in Class 12 during a group project or society interview. What starts to matter is how you work, what you care about, and whether you show up for yourself and others.
3. Making real friends takes time
You might feel like everyone’s already found their group while you’re still awkwardly eating lunch alone. Trust me—friendships happen slowly. Be yourself, stay open, and you’ll find people who truly vibe with you.
4. Free time is a gift, not a trap
You’ll have pockets of free time between classes or after college, and it’s easy to waste it scrolling or overthinking. Try using that time to explore something you enjoy—maybe writing, designing, learning a language, or volunteering. Small things add up.
5. You don’t need to attend everything
College can feel like a rush—so many events, meetups, fests, and plans. But you’re allowed to say no. You don’t have to be everywhere all the time. Take breaks when you need to. Protect your energy.
6. It’s okay to struggle mentally
College can get overwhelming—new people, pressure to perform, homesickness, comparison. You might feel low, anxious, or just tired. Please talk to someone. A friend, a senior, or even your college counselor. You’re not weak—you’re human.
7. There’s more to college than just grades
Yes, academics are important. But what you learn outside the classroom—how to speak up, take initiative, stay calm, or just be kind—those things matter too. Don’t ignore them.
8. Start building connections, not just a CV
Talk to your seniors. Interact with your professors. Join a club that excites you. These small conversations might open up opportunities you didn’t even know existed.
9. Money disappears fast—learn to handle it
Whether it’s endless chai, random online sales, or rickshaw rides, your wallet will feel empty a lot. Try tracking where your money goes and saving a little when you can. Even basic budgeting can go a long way.
10. You will change—and that’s something to be proud of
Maybe you’ll start dressing differently, speaking more confidently, or dreaming bigger. Maybe your priorities will shift. Don’t feel guilty for evolving. Growth is messy, but it’s beautiful.
A gentle reminder…
College isn’t a straight line. Some days you’ll feel on top of the world. Other days, not so much. But every moment—good or bad—is shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and more you.
So, take a deep breath. You’re doing just fine. 💛
